Burglar Security and Yesteryear...

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10114/1052796-30.stm

Here's an article about the challenges that we face in today's society. In the old days noone used to lock their doors, but things have changed...

"Today, leaving a door unlocked can be dangerous. The need for home security has become a necessary part of our lives. Last year, more than 4 million residences were burglarized. Folks with home security systems are 15 times less apt to be burglarized than families without them. Doors are the first place that burglars try. So, invest in strong doors with even stronger locks. Don't rely on a latch that can be opened with a knife or credit card."

Why Burglary is not at all Like Being Struck By Lightning

In this story form the NYTimes we read about a burglar hitting some of the luxury brands in the fashionable district of SoHo in New York.

Thing is, one of the stores got burglared three times!
Although being burgled and being struck my lightning are both rare and unfortunate events, that's where the similarity ends.

If you have been burgled and you fail to follow up on it by hardening your security and dealing with the hole in your security that the burglar exposed then, unfortuanly, you are even more likely to be burgled again.
hink like a burglar and make sure your weakest links aren’t glaringly obvious.

Burglar breaks into bank... what can WE learn from that?

It seems like out homes aren't the only targets for burglars and not only that, that the same old ways of breaking into a building crop time and time again- in this story it was a window.

However, even though this bank did get broken into and some valuable were taken and damage was caused, it wasn't a catastrophic loss because they followed some basic security procedures.
1. protect high value goods with high level security. In this case a big safe.
For us at home that means that if you do have high value goods that you would be devasted to lose (and we're talking sentimental as well as monetary value) then invest in some basic protective measures to make it as hard as possible for a burglar to get away with your valuables.

Burglar Security and Robots | A Threat for the Future?

burglar security and robots
Well well, life imitating art again as we see that the development of robot technology is getting ever more complex and impressive.
So much so that it won't be long before their complexity and "usefulness" could actually be a security threat. See this following link for the full story:

Home Invasion Prevention | Tips to Keep You and Your Family Safe

Here's a round-up of some excellent security and safety tip- link
This article describes a number of the common masquerades burglars will use to try and gain access to your home:
  • Uniformed individual telling of gas leak, problems with utilities/cable, parcel delivery
  • Someone coming to tell you the good news that you have won something (and then getting details from you)
  • Someone pretending to collect for charity (and then snatching purse, wallet)
  • Someone pretending to be in distress and asking to enter your home
Some on these are extremely tricky and if you are an altruistic person, of course you're going to try and help. While you can't live your life thinking that everyone is an enemy out to get you, it is wise to keep an open mind and a watchful eye if one of these scenarios should present itself.

And at the next family meeting it would be useful to discuss with the members of your family so that you're all on the same page.

Burglar Security and Burglar Stereotypes

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/cumbria/8281754.stm

If you think of the word burglar and then think of the image then is it of a 77 year old man on a bicycle?
This story from the BBC just goes to show that burglars don't necessarily fit into the stereotypes we might imagine, so when inviting strangers into your home, don't be fooled by a "safe" stereotype.
